Light Refreshments and Social Community in a SAFE SPACE for LGBTQ+ Youth and Allies

Who’s Invited? Saginaw County youth enrolled in grades 8 through 12 who believe that all young people should be respected for who they are regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Who’s in charge? The group is sponsored by First Congregational Church, UCC and volunteers from the Saginaw Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Youth Advisory Council (SOGI YAC). Although the group is hosted and sponsored by First Congregational Church, it is a secular group (meaning it has no religious basis). The lead facilitator, J Steele-Louchart, is a certified teacher and is committed to creating a safe space for youth in Saginaw County.

What’s the purpose? SAY will operate as a community-based Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA). GSAs provide a safe place for young people to meet, support each other, talk about issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity and expression, and work to end homophobia and transphobia. Activities and goals will be driven by the youth and will result in adaptable, youth-led community where everyone can discuss, socialize, and create. Typical activities may include movies, snacks, games, guest speakers, and training opportunities.

For group information, contact J Steele-Louchart. For location/security questions, contact Barb.

Saginaw DHHS Recruiting Foster Parents

Foster Parents

Saginaw County Department of Health and Human Services is actively recruiting new foster parents, with a priority to license homes willing to accept teenagers into their hearts. Please contact Virginia Irwin or by phone at 989-293-6589.

Saginaw County often has to place children into residential facilities or outside of the county as homes are limited in our own communities. Please consider opening your home and heart to youth in need.
